Mushy Things đ
Movies to make you swoon this Valentine's Day
Hi! Hello!
All hail the romantic comedy. For the romantics, the heartbroken, those looking to disassociate for a couple of hours, the rom com has provided solace and escape. The movies that make us cry, the ones that make us feel warm inside and the ones that remind us how precious love is.
Ahead of Valentineâs Day, I wanted to round up some upcoming romantic comedy releases to get us in the mood as well as highlight some of my long standing favorites. Cheers to the movies that make us feel mushy!
Movies Streaming Now and/or Coming Out ASAP
I am rounding up a couple of recently released as well as soon to be released rom coms for you to curl up and watch this Valentineâs Day.
Wish You Were Here (January 27)
Wish You Were Here is the directorial debut of Julia Stiles and is based off the book by RenĂŠe Carlino. When a woman searching for romance connects with someone on one perfect night, she finds out that he is terminally ill and is committed to making his last days spent living life to the fullest. This one will for sure make me cry!
Youâre Cordially Invited (January 30)
An Amazon Original out now starring Will Ferrel and Reese Witherspoon. Two weddings are accidentally booked on the same day at the same venue and each bridal party fights to protect their familyâs special moment. Itâs giving Bride Wars!
Kinda Pregnant (February 5)
From Netflix, Kinda Pregnant is out now! Starring Amy Schumer as a teacher in her 40âs whose plan to settle down and start a family falls apart, she puts on a fake baby bump, tells a lie accidentally falls for her dream guy.
This Time Next Year (February 10)
I just read this book in January and had absolutely no idea it was being made into a movie until after I had read the book. Streaming on the Roku Channel on February 10th, This Time Next Year finds Minnie and Quinn finally together on New Years Eve after a lifetime of just missing each other. Also Lucien Laviscount from Emily in Paris (Rome) đ
La Dolce Villa (February 13)
Netflixâs Valentines Day release! Olivia is considering buying a crumbling Italian villa for 1⏠(the dream). Her dad rushes there to talk her out of it and instead finds romance. I love how Netflix is investing in romantic comedies and two of my favorites that they have released - Always Be My Maybe and Someone Great.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (February 13)
Bridget Jonesâs Diary is my comfort movie and I could watch it again and again. So I am so so excited that a new one is coming out. In Mad About a Boy, Bridget is once again single after being widowed four years ago when Mark *spoiler* is killed on a humanitarian mission. Bridget returns to work and between juggling work and home, is there room for romance?
Other Rom Coms To Watch Out For
The next couple of movies are coming out later in 2025 so look out for them!
Picture This (March 6)
Releasing on Prime on March 6, this came up on my feed while scrolling TikTok one morning. Pia (Simone Ashley) is told that she will find the love of her life on her next five dates. Her family and friends take it upon themselves to play matchmaker just as her ex comes back into her life.
A Nice Indian Boy (April 4)
After screenings at SXSW and BFI Film Festival, A Nice Indian Boy finally has a theatrical release date for US theaters. This is Rosham Sethiâs directorial debut, this film is a love story about a white photographer (Jonathan Groff) and an Indian doctor (Karan Soni). I am so excited for this cross-cultural love story and the cross-generational family politics they have to navigate.
The Wedding Banquet (April 18)
Releasing in April, this is a remake of Ang Leeâs 1993 romantic comedy. A comedy of errors, this film explores family expectations and cultural identity. It has an all-star cast and it promises to be equal parts laugh out loud and mushy. I studied The Wedding Banquet in school so I canât wait to watch the new one!
Love, Brooklyn (Theatrical/Streaming Release Tbd)
Directed by Rachael Abigail Holder in her feature debut, Love, Brooklyn is about Roger who is attempting to write a story about a changing Brooklyn. As the movie plays out it becomes more clear that Rogerâs writersâ block is linked to the trouble in his romantic relationships. This premiered at Sundance in January and its theatrical debut has yet to be announced but I am very much looking forward to this one!
Materialists (Theatrical/Streaming Release Tbd)
Written and directed by Celine Song known for Past Lives comes her next film Materials. A matchmakerâs livelihood is threatened when she falls into a love triangle. Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal? Say less. Thereâs not much online about this film yet but hopefully it comes out later this year.
My All Time Favorites
Lastly, I wanted to include some of my all time favorites. These are movies I love and could watch again and again. Bonus points if they make me cry!
Crazy Rich Asians
Rachel is excited to finally visit Singapore with her longtime boyfriend for his best friendâs wedding. But Nick has a secret heâs been keeping, heâs not just rich, heâs crazy rich. I loved the books and I loved the movie - now if only they would release the next one! This is a perfect movie and anytime I see it on a plane I have to watch it.
Bridget Jonesâs Diary
The OG Bridget Jonesâs Diary is a perfect movie. Bridget Jones is impossibly single and working at a publishing company in London when she begins having fantasizing about her boss Daniel Cleaver. To her utter shock, he begins flirting back. After watching over a dozen times, this movie still makes me cry.
How to Be Single
It was a tradition to go to the movies with my gal pals on Valentineâs Day (and to sneak in a bottle of wine). And one of my favorite movies from this era was How to Be Single. Starring Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson and Leslie Mann, this movie is so quotable. My favorite moment from the whole movie is as the credits are about to roll, Dakota Johnson says âCab driver, take me homeâ and youâre expecting fade to black. Instead the driver says something to the effect of âBitch I donât know where you liveâ and I think about that moment a lot.
Pride and Prejudice
I, like some many others love Jane Austen. Did you know that 2025 is the 250th anniversary of her birth? The 2005 film starring Keira Knightly is a perfect movie and I love it so much. So much in fact, I bought the movie so I could watch it whenever I wanted on my iPod Classic. I often listen to the soundtrack while working.
What are your rom com favorites? Let me know in the comments!

Savannah
