A Quick Note
Where I'm at
Hi! Hello!
Just a quick note to say that I’m taking a break from my regular weekly posts and hope to be back to my regular posting schedule next week. Between a crazy couple of weeks at my 9-5 and dealing with some on-going health issues, I’m giving myself some grace to show up here as I feel able.
I’m feeling positive about my health outcome mostly because I feel closer to answers than ever before and I am grateful for doctors who listen and for the headspace I am in right now to be able to advocate for myself. There are still appointments to make and tests to run. But when I have a diagnosis, I fully intend to openly share my experience because women’s healthcare is bullshit and no one’s pain deserves to be dismissed and diminished.
I also want to say that it has been heavy on my heart these last few weeks thinking about all the Americans who are currently out of work or working without pay and all of those that are impacted by the current benefit cuts.
CupofJoe shared a really great post about why millions are losing their food benefits and some ways that you can actually help.
I want to share some of the things I am doing in my own life to help my neighbors who are hungry and challenging those of you who are able to step up where our government won’t.
My local mutual aid group puts together Thanksgiving meals for our neighbors each year so I am chipping in to help make sure a couple of families are able to eat this Thanksgiving. I encourage you to find ways to help your neighbors where you can and mutual aid groups are a great way to ensure that money is going directly to your community. You can find mutual aid groups in NYC here and across the country here.
I am also committing to adding some additional pantry staples to my weekly grocery shop to drop at my community fridge each week. Fridge Finder is a great resource to see if there are any community fridges or pantries near you. Erin Boyle shared some really great resources here and provides some wisdom on what to donate to a food pantry. My biggest takeaways were to donate boxed milk, prioritize cans with pop top lids, and butter and oil as these rarely get donated. In years past I’ve also donated cake mix and icing during the week of my birthday so that someone else can celebrate their birthday with cake that week as well.
I’ve been seeing a lot of “come with me to the food pantry” content on TikTok and I love how these individuals are working to de stigmatize needing help. There may be a time in all of our lives where we find we are not able to feed ourselves and our families and there should not be shame in that.
As always take care of yourselves and take care of your community.
Until next time,
Savannah
