2024 Reading Data
My 2024 reading stats
Hi! Hello!
I had a really good reading year in 2024. Today, I am reviewing all the data from my 2024 reads - nerds unite!
I use two apps to track my reading throughout the year - using them to add books I want to read as well as those that I am currently reading. I have been using Goodreads for many years but the interface is a little clunky and dated. I have hundreds of books saved that I want to read and I am connected to friends so we can see what each other is reading so I didn’t want to completely abandon Goodreads for Storygraph.
If you have never used Storygraph, may I introduce you? Storygraph tracks your reading and creates charts and graphs of your reading habits which you can break down by month and year in a way that really scratches my brain. They also help you migrate your books from Goodreads if you are looking to make the switch.
Since 2022, I’ve been using both to track my reading throughout the year and I will be using the charts from Storygraph to review my reading from the year. Let’s jump in to the stats!
In 2024, I read 83 books. In 2023, I read 71 books which, at the time, was my best year of reading yet. This year I surpassed that personal best. Every year my goal is to read 52 books. At a book a week, this goal doesn’t feel too ambitious or too easy to reach and I don’t want to loose out on the joy of reading by setting the goal too high. Even though I’ve met this number the last couple of years, I am happy keeping my goal of reading 52 books for 2025.
Now let’s dive deeper into my 2024 reading.
83 books is equivalent to roughly 28,183 pages with the average time to finish a book 11 days. Interestingly - my average pace to finish a book was 6 days in 2023. I think this year’s pace was significantly slowed because I read this Brianna Wiest’s book over several months - which slowed my average book pace significantly overall. I read an essay before journaling and this really helped guide my journaling practice over the year. I would love to pick up another book to use in this way in 2025.
I typically read one fiction and one nonfiction book at a time, reading one physically or on my Kindle and listening to the other.
My biggest reading mood in 2024 was emotional with reflective, funny and informative following.
In 2023, my top reading mood was emotional followed by reflective, funny and light hearted. Interestingly dark was higher on the mood list in 2024 than 2023.
I read more thrillers in 2024 - but still managed year over year to read plenty of books that made me cry even though the books may have been darker.
Storygraph’s pace data is user-driven. This year, based on their categorization, I read 1 slow paced book - 101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think.
Based on the data, I read 7 fast paced books with 90% of my reading in 2024 medium paced books based on their data.
I don’t really agree or disagree with this graph - there are some books I read this year that felt like they dragged and I would have categorized them as slow paced so maybe next year I should do a better job of reviewing books on Storygraph when I finish them to make this chart more accurate.
I do love that on Storygraph you can DNF (did not finish) books - something you can’t currently do on Goodreads.
I read one book over 500 pages - Age of Vice. This book reads like an epic movie. At 560 pages, it was the longest book I read this year.
The shortest book I read was I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced which I read as a part of my Reading Around the World Challenge. It was 188 pages.
Overall, I read 16 short books - less than 300 pages - and the majority of the books I read were between 300-499 pages (64 books).
The average length of books I read in 2024 was 350 pages.
I try to balance my reading by reading one fiction and one non-fiction book at a time. I tend to listen to more non-fiction audiobooks. I love listening to memoirs and having people tell you their life’s story. I love listening to fiction books when the production does something to enhance the story - like with a multicast of narrators or with full sound design. And yes, I count listening to audiobooks as reading.
This year I read 34% nonfiction (28 books) and 66% fiction (55 books). I slightly increased the ratio of nonfiction to fiction in 2024 over last year. In 2023, I read 23% nonfiction and 77% fiction.
My reading by genre is very interesting! By far contemporary was my most read genre - with 28 books falling under this category. Romance, memoir and thriller took the next three spots with historical being the fifth highest genre.
Compared to 2023 - which were contemporary, literary and then romance, memoir and historical rounding out my top 5 genres.
In 2024, literary was much further down the list, beat out by thriller and mystery. As I said earlier, I definitely read more darker thrillers in 2024.
I don’t really feel like the format chart is an accurate representation of how I read this year as I am not careful about marking books that I listened to as audiobooks in the app. I think my listening hours were definitely higher but it is interesting to see how Storygraph has broken this out based on little to no data on my part.
I had a few repeat authors this year. I discovered Abby Jimenez and read her Part of Your World Trilogy. I started the year with Oliver Burkeman’s Four Thousand Weeks and read his newest book in December. I loved Dolly Alderton’s book Ghosts and I finally read her memoir: Everything I Know About Love and her newest fiction book Good Material. And lastly - I rediscovered Katherine Center thanks to my favorite podcast. I first read one of her books - Things You Save in a Fire - in 2020.
October and November were my best reading months - I read 9 books each month. It’s interesting to see books vs pages plotted here.
On Goodreads, the most shelved book I read this year was Circe and the least shelved book was A Golden Cage.
This year, I began my Reading Around the world challenge and I read 17 books towards my challenge, traveling to 17 countries through the pages of these books.
If you’re interested in my reading list for this challenge, you can check that out here.
Let’s take a look at the list of the counties I have read so far:
Russia | Australia | Canada | Turkmenistan | Yemen | Cambodia | China | France | Singapore | Iran | Vietnam | Iceland | Rwanda | Albania | Croatia | Maldives | Syria
That’s it for my 2024 reading stats. I would love to know more about your favorite books of 2024 and encourage you to set your own reading goal for 2025. It is a really good resolution if you are looking for one and a great hobby to lean on if you haven’t picked up a book in awhile.
Happy new year and happy reading!
